This report is designed to give an overview of the community of Barrington; within this report are numerous sections that will look at various qualities of the community including geography, education, demographics, income and poverty, and various other factors that impact the community makeup. This report is designed to give as accurate a picture as possible and thus will include both positive and negative features within each of the areas of focus.
Quick Overview
The town of Barrington is a seaside community located in eastern Rhode Island, nine miles southeast of Providence. The town of Barrington has a small population of 16,339 people. Of this population, only 4,745 of them are children under the age of eighteen. Of these children, 11% live in single-family homes as compared to 30% for the rest of the state. There are 6,011 families occupying the town of Barrington. Of these families, 142 are considered below poverty level. This is a very low number as it makes up less than 1% of the overall number of families.
Districts
Barrington, even though it is only eight square miles, is actually broken down into seven different neighborhoods.These seven neighborhoods are then regrouped into three larger areas in order to make the school districts more clear.
Sowams
Sowams is comprised of two neighborhoods, Hampden Meadows and Sowams. The area has a great variety of old and modern styled houses built in private cul-de-sacs. One interesting fact about Sowams is the Hampden Meadow Greenbelt, a cleared path through the woods that provides a safe walking route to school. The two schools that are in Sowans are Sowams Elementary School and Hampden Meadows School, the fourth and fifth grade school.
Nayatt
Nayatt is comprised of two neighborhoods, Rumstick and Nayatt. The area has many houses set at the waterfront, with styles ranging from beach cottages to Victorian homes. Nyatt is also the location of Barrington's town beach. The one school located in Nyatt is Nayatt Elementary School.
Primrose Hill is comprised of four different neighborhoods: West Barrington, Alfred Drowne, Bay Spring and Primrose Hill. Located here are a very large campground and small mills. Many of the houses have access to the water, and the houses mimic those in the district of Nyatt with some newer ranch models included as well. Primrose Hill is home to Primrose Hill Elementary School, and both the Barrington Middle School and high school.

The information shown by these two charts lays out the health and safety information for the Barrington community. In regards to health, the information proves that Barrington is quite a healthy area. Only 316 children under the age of 19 are receiving medical assistance, compared to the large amount throughout the state of 89,746. Also, only 1.3% of children in Barrington had elevated blood levels, a relatively healthy amount of children. The rest of the information in the health chart deals with pregnancy and prenatal care. The information overall shows that the Barrington community is on top of the health of its people, and because of this, the people of Barrington seem to be overall healthier and even more successful than those with more health risks and less health care.
The second chart shows the safety information of the Barrington community. When examining the information, you'll notice that Barrington's numbers are significantly lower than the state average, which is a good thing. 1.5% of children in Barrington are victims of child abuse and neglect, only 1.3% of children have parents that are incarcerated. The only information that seems a bit high and could definitely use improvement is the domestic violence incidents in homes with children present. 22% of households in Barrington have had this occur. Compared to the state average of 31%, this is a good thing, but overall the numbers should be much lower.
The two charts display some very key information about Barrington. Although some of the numbers could use some work and improvement, Barrington is overall a relatively safe and healthy place to live in the state of Rhode Island.
Income and Poverty in Barrington
Barrington is quite the wealthy area when compared to the rest of the state. The average household income in Barrington per year is $74,591.[1] This is a large amount, compared to the state average of $55,327.[2] Along with household income, the average family income in Barrington is large as well. The average in Barrington is $84,657, an overwhelming amount compared to the state average of $71,082.[3]The per capita income in the town of Barrington is $35,881, compared to the state average of $28,551.[4] When it comes to income, Barrington is anywhere from $7,000 to close to $20,000 over the state average.
Family Life
Family life is a huge aspect of life in Barrington. Although every family is different, Barrington is overwhelmingly family oriented. The child population in the town of Barrington is 4,745, an important piece in the state child population of 247,822.[5] Although there is a large amount of children in Barrington, only 11% live in a single-parent home, compared to the 30% of children in a single-parent home in the rest of the state.[6] 2% of households in Barrington have grandparents that are financially responsible for their grandchildren. This is half of the amount as the state average being 4% of households having grandparents as the "money-maker". [7] Poverty is a huge issue in our country, especially in Rhode Island. Although this problem is at large, only 2.7% of families in Barrington live below the federal poverty line.[8] This is a small number compared to 16.9% state average of families living below the poverty line.[9] The state of Rhode Island has an average of 7.3% of teens not working and not in school, compared to only 2.2% of teens in Barrington.[10]
